Enlightened Practice of the Month
Skip-level Evaluations
From Mitch Kusy and Elizabeth Holloway comes a solution to the age-old problem of the toxic supervisor. Kusy and Holloway’s research found that 94 percent of all leaders have worked with a toxic, or abusive, colleague. When that colleague is your boss, life can be truly miserable. You may have to grit your teeth and comply when the demands are outrageous or the treatment hostile, dismissive or cruel. All the while, you wish there were a politic way to let the toxic boss’ boss know you’re being held hostage. Kusy and Holloway have a suggestion for enlightened organizations: Require annual, anonymous evaluations of bosses by staff, and have leaders one level up administer them. That way, toxic behavior by bosses can be monitored and corrected.
